High School Hospital Summer Helpers (HS2)
Let's get ready for summer: HS2 Volunteers (formerly Summer Junior Volunteer Program) are high school students interested in administrative and patient-centered care vocations. HS2 volunteers serve at the Johns Hopkins Hospital East Baltimore Campus. HS2 is a 6-7 week commitment to volunteer 2-3 days a week. Volunteers will hear talks from staff about various roles around the hospital and serve to help patients find their way and in a unique hospital volunteer projects.
The application period for HS2 Volunteers for the Summer 2025 Program will be Tuesday, February 18th through Tuesday, February 25th.
HS2 Applicant Requirements
Applications are open to students 15 to 18 years old. Students must be at least 15 years old by June 1, 2025. Only complete applications will be considered. To be complete, these applications must:
- Complete the application form below by February 25th
- Applications must have two references. One from a teacher from the current school year, and one from a non-parent adult.
- Submit your HS2 Self-Introduction Project by March 1st, 2025. Details on how to submit will be found in your application confirmation email.
Applicants chosen for an interview will be notified by email and invited to select an interview session – dates below.
Important Program Dates:
February 18-25: HS2 Applications Accepted
March 1: Self Introduction Project Submission Deadline
March 10: Interview invites are sent by email
March 17-21: Interviews between 2:00 and 6:00 p.m
May 28 or 29 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM: mandatory volunteer/parent information session
June 20: Deadline for completed forms, training, and Occupational Health Clearance
June 20 or June 23: Participant Training Days – attend one
June 24: first day of HS2 volunteering
August 14: last day of HS2 volunteering
If selected, the Johns Hopkins Volunteer Policy requires all participants:
- Before June 20:
- Complete volunteer training and forms
- Be Cleared By Occupational Health Services, which requires:
- current MMR, varicella, TDAP and flu vaccines,
- have a TSPOT test to screen for tuberculosis (provided free)
- Volunteers must have documented at least 2 COVID vaccines
- Serve a minimum of 100 hours volunteering:
- Hours done Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. unless otherwise approved
- one assigned full day weekly
- flexibility to sign up as desired for other shift and opportunities
- No more than 24 hours/3 days/6 shifts given in one week.
